The organization most responsible for the prservation of history in the City of Russellville is "Historic Russellville, Inc." For many years local historians have worked within this organization to preserve structures as well as oral and written history. The Saddle Factory Museum, Bibb House Museum, Payne Dunnigan Museum and the other houses within the West Kentucky Afican-American Heritage Center, just to name a few, are on their list of proud accomplishments. The Historic Russellville Vistior Center and Archives Building at 280 East 4th Street have also been restored and are the center and hub of activity for scheduling tours of the Museums and the Historic District.Call Linda Slaton at 270-726-4181 for more information.

History Of Russellville

Known as “Rogues’ Harbour” and “Big Boiling Spring” to the early settlers, it has held the name of Russellville since 1798 in honor of Revolutionary War General William Russell. The majority of the early settlers came from Virginia and North Carolina.

Held together by a strong faith that a story will be forever remembered, the newly formed West Kentucky African American Heritage Corp. has become very popular as an educational center for African American history in this part of the state.

The newly restored KP Hall and the Alice Dunnigan Home are a tribute to the dedication of many people working together to preserve a part of our history.
